Drill Operator This job is a vital position requiring overall knowledge of the complete operation. The operator also needs the experience of what a trainee and a helper do, or equivalent. The Operator is critical to the success of installing product and therefore needs to understand how the drill works, how the right drilling fluids work, drilling techniques and maintenance of the drill. He is directly responsible for the condition of the drill. The Operator must know how to best set up the drill for given situations. It is critical that the Operator know and follow Safety Systems and Emergency Procedures. The Operator must know all utilities in the bore path and understand the best profile to take to avoid the utilities as well as what it takes to make a good hole for the product being installed. It is critical that the Drill Operator be in charge of the drill and certain of what is taking place before moving the drill or rotating the tooling in any way. Special care must be taken when changing tooling and attaching product to be installed. The Operator must refuse to move or rotate the drill if the Operator sees or feels something unsafe is about to take place and refer it to the foreman and if necessary to the Manager of Safety. (The Operator must shut down the motor of the drill when getting off the drill especially when people are working with the drill string and tooling). The Operator is responsible to maintain housekeeping of the drill and do the daily maintenance and well as report conditions of the drill to the supervisor. The Operator is responsible for the care and rotation of the rods. When the shot is complete, the Operator will disconnect and move the drill to the next shot or load the drill for transport and restore any damage or clean up resulting from the drill. The operator will also assist in correctly backfilling pits and holes, know how to safely do stub -ups and tie-ins, as well lay sod, and do site restoration. The Operator will help in the process of training crew members in the duties of a drill operator and how to properly operate and care for the drill. |
